"Expressing Nature's Soul Through the Power of Ink"

My name is Ayumi, a sumie (Japanese black ink painting) artist.

 I grew up in the lush, nature-rich environment of Hyogo Prefecture, where my grandfather, who taught sumie, introduced me to the world of art. As a child, I spent my days sketching, always surrounded by the scent of ink and the presence of creativity. 

 
In university, my passion for art led me to study graphic design, aspiring to work in a creative field. After graduation, I took a position at city hall, yet I continued to create art, waiting for the right opportunity to pursue my dream full-time. That opportunity arrived finally!  

I received a request for a illustration book and published it. 

 Based on the true story of a daikon radish that grew through asphalt, this tale conveyed the importance of life and the power of nature. The book garnered significant attention and was even included in elementary school textbooks. 
 

Following this success, I decided to pursue art independently. Initially, I worked with colored pencils and graphic design. However, after my grandfather passed away, I revisited his legacy, using the brushes, ink, and washi paper (Japanese paper)he left behind.

 This experience reignited my love for sumie, and I realized that this was my true path in life. I then trained under the modern sumie contemporary ink painting artist master, Shukou Tsuchiya. 
 
 

My art draws from the rich, seasonal landscapes of Japan, blending traditional styles with inspirations from music, encounters, and lessons from my journey. Through expressing these deep, internal images, I create unique works of art. With the power of sumi black ink, I aim to share this passion with the world

About the Process of Creating My Artwork 

Nature is my greatest source of inspiration. For example, the sound of waterbirds taking flight at the water’s edge, or the temperature of the water itself, resonates deeply with me. From these sensations, I form shapes using gradients of ink from white to black, then add color with pigments. Through ink and color, I seek to express both strength and gentleness, capturing the powerful moment of takeoff. 

I am also inspired by elements such as music, scents, words, and emotions, and aim to create works that feel cinematic in their scope. 

Ink possesses unique qualities—bleeding, gradation, and roughness—that cannot be achieved with other materials. Because the expression changes greatly depending on the type of washi paper, I carefully select my materials and tools for each work.

 Ink painting developed in Japan alongside Zen philosophy, evolving into a form unique to this culture. While learning from this tradition, I also explore abstract and contemporary expressions. Through abstract works, I value allowing each viewer to feel freely and discover their own story. 

Rooted in the subtle sensibility of Japanese aesthetics, I seek to create one-of-a-kind expressions that transcend time and borders by blending tradition with my own individuality. 

My methods of expression have evolved over time, but my message remains consistent: to understand and appreciate the power and beauty of nature, cherish life and the Earth, and pass these values on to the next generation. I hope that each person can enjoy life with the help of nature’s power. Through my art, I aspire to connect with people around the world and bring positive news to light. 


 

～墨絵Artist 天遊美として活動するまでのストーリー ～

幼少期は、水墨画教室を開いていた祖父にお絵描きを教わったり、近くの山にスケッチに行ったり、自然囲まれて、墨の香りやアートに親しみながら過ごしました。

高校卒業後デザイン科に進みましたが、デザイン系の仕事には就かず、市役所に就職しました。日々仕事を続けていく中で、いつか絵に関わる仕事をしてみたい、と、制作を続けていました。

心身の不調をきたす時期があり、その時に出会ったのが、アートセラピーです。それはものを見て描くという手法ではありませんでした。上手下手は関係なく、ただ自分を表現してみることで、自分の心に気づくというものでした。これまでは上手く描けなくて悩むこともありましたが、正解がない世界に、心が癒されていくのが分かりました。
そして色やアートと心の結びつきに興味を惹かれて、学びを深めていきました。

そんな時、アスファルトから大根が生えた、ど根性大根が話題となり、絵本を出版する機会を得ました。続編を出版するにあたり、これまで学んできたことや、絵を描くことを仕事にしようと決め、退職、独立しました。

より多くの人に、型にはまらず、自由に表現をすることに触れ合え、色の魅力を伝えられる場所を、と、子どもの造形教室、カラーセラピーや、アートセラピーのワークショップなども行うサロンを開設しました。

活動する中で、表現したものが美しいと、作った人も、見た人も両方、感動し癒されるということを感じる場面が多く、ただのらくがきではなく、テクニックも大切なことだと改めて思い、アーティストの技術を取り入れた、臨床美術を学びました。

ある時、外国人観光客のための水墨画のワークショップを依頼され、久しぶりに、筆と墨で竹を描きました。墨と水だけで描く白と黒の世界は、幼少期には少し物足りないものでしたが、その時の私には、ああ、これだ、とストンと胸に落ち、その後、この道に進みなさいと言われているような出来事が次々と起こっていきました。

それは祖父が他界した時と重なり、遺された筆を持つことに決めました。

そして本格的に学ぶために、東京へ。
線の引き方を一から学びました。
伝統的な技術を要する水墨画は簡単にマスターできるものではありませんが、自然の美しさを見直すきっかけとなり、何気ない日常にも日本の文化が活かされていて、その魅力を感じることにも繋がっていきました。

そして、現代美術家でもある師匠のすすめもあり、墨で抽象画を描いてみることに。
墨と色で広がる想像の世界は、アートセラピーと重なり、四季折々の自然や、内から広がるイメージなど、表現していきたいものがあふれてきました。

嬉しいことに、癒される、明るい気持ちになった、と作品を手元に置きたいと言われる方も増えていき、これまでの経験を融合させた、自分だけのアートを表現したいと思い、墨絵Artist天遊美として、再スタートしました。

自然の持つ美しさ、命、魂・・・、墨と色の力を借りて、伝えたいことを発信していきたいと思っています。
